We kicked off with the fabulous animation by Sylvain Chomet, The Illusionist. As it rained gently outside the venue, we tucked into popcorn and watched this sad tale of an old man in a changing world.

After the film Rob Birchall and Kenneth Anderson, both freelance animators who worked in the animation department of the film answered questions put to them by Young Programmer’s Bill Houghton and Bruce Koziarski on the making of the film. Lots of people in the audience had lots of questions; clearly there were some keen young animators in the house!

Lunch was free for all under 21 year olds (+ two hungry animators!) We tucked in and continued to question the incredibly helpful and lovely Rob and Kenny.

More people trickled in during lunch time in readiness for our next film: Just Do It - a tale of modern outlaws. This film was fantastic! It followed several direct action climate activists as they explained why they felt the need to act as outlaws and how they went about this. I think everyone in the cinema was inspired to do the same by the end!

Lauren Simpson, the film’s producer answered questions from Young Programmer’s Aimee Hornby and Simo Hussain. Video of interview coming soon!

More sustenance followed next; hot tomato soup and butties! During tea-time the evening’s speakers arrived - the talented Maia Krall Fry arrived all the way from St Andrews, shortly followed by Rob Savage’s arrival by train from Cheltenham.

We kicked the evening off with a full house and our youth shorts programme. The youth shorts programme consisted of the films of the 7 finalists from an open submissions call for 13-21 year old film makers from the UK. The Young Programmers watched all of the submissions and chose the strongest films to screen. Full details of all the films are in the pdf download of the festival brochure.

Using the trusty crowd response monitor, the ‘Clap-o-meter’, we gauged the audiences’ favourite film and stashed the result away for the awards ceremony. In the meantime, Aimee Hornby and Bill Houghton, Young Programmer interviewers extraordinaire, conducted a Q&A session with young director ofPolaroid, Rob Savage. Plenty of questions from the audience on the trials and tribulations of being a young film maker.

The final film of the evening was introduced by its director and star, Maia Krall Fry. Maia was only 17 when she wrote, directed and starred in the feature film,Ebony Road. The film was thoroughly enjoyed by all and Bill and Aimee conducted a fantastic Q&A session with Maia following the screening. Again, our wonderful audience had heaps of questions for Maia about her experience of working in the film industry at such a young age.

To round off the festival, the Young Programmers announced the winners of the short film competition:

People’s Choice: Sophie Heppel & Andrew Harrison’sCome Here Often?

Judges’ Choice 3rd prize: Rob Savage’sPolaroid

Judges’ Choice 2nd prize: Matthew Melling’sBrief Dream Encounters

Judges’ Choice 1st prize: William Fuller’sDon’t Turn Your Back

All were invited to the party at the end to wrap up an amazing day!

Big thanks to all and check out the following posts for videos and photos from the day.
